Mt Wellington Lower Slopes 30 Nov 2021

Today's walk will be according to leader Ron a stroll around the lower slopes of Mt Wellington starting from the carpark at Ferntree via Silver Falls, the Springs, Sphinx Rock, the Octopus Tree, O'Grady Falls back to the car park.

The weather forecast is finally predicting the arrival of sunny warm summer weather so an ideal to walk on the mountain.

Leaving the carpark.

Walking past the village centre of FernTree with its English style garden.

And massive rhododendrons in full display.

Then we discovered that the recent renovations to the park took away part of the original path.

Now walking along the Pipeline Track.

Silver Falls with a nice supply of water.

Starting the climb up Reids Track to Radfords Track then the Springs for morning tea.

Ron provided this photo of me talking (again) about our native orchids with this one growing alongside a drain across the track.

Large Bird Orchid.

After morning tea we followed the Lenah Valley Track via Sphinx Rock.

The view over Kingston and Storm Bay from Sphinx Rock.

As you can see the weather was perfect with the mountain spectacularly clear.

Looking down on Hobart City.

Wandering past Rock Cabin.

Mountain berries ripening in the summer sun.

More view from the track.

A type of Jelly Fungi maybe Tremella Fuciformis???

More Mountain Berries.

On the Shoobridge Track to the Octopus Tree.

Why have they all suddenly stopped.

The Octopus Tree.

Another fungi.

This Golden Whistler really entertained us with his songs while we were lunching beside the track.

Down the Betts Vale Track.

Chris thought this looked like Dicksonia Antarctica fossils.

 O'Gradys Falls.

Now the second climb of the day.

A bunch of bushwalkers checking out Rocky Whelan's Cave. For further information about Rcky Whelan and his dastardly deeds follow this link https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Whelan_(bushranger)

Every good bolthole has an emergency exit.

Heading down the carpark.

Ron has realized that he is on the wrong track but Bob says just keep going it will work out and it did.

Ron has set a task for all those walkers that participated in today's walk.  How many bridges did we all cross on today's walk.

There were 12 walkers today and they covered 9.2 kms in 4.5 hours ascending an initial 215 meters then descending approx 150 meters before climbing and descending a further 150 meters.

In all a good days walk which everyone enjoyed.
