Carlton River - 25 July 2023

With weather that is mild for this time of year Chris will lead today's walk around Dodges Ferry

We assemble at the Boat Ramp and he starts off going towards Tiger Head at a brisk pace with an uphill section (just to get the blood pumping)

Michael with Spectacle Islands in the background

We go around Tiger Head on the way to Red Ochre Beach

On the way we see a cubby house that any kid would like to have and also this sandstone sculpture that someone has made

Here we see some examples of natures artwork

What do this homemade raft and the Titanic have in common? .. it looks that they may both end up on the bottom!

Janine does her own exploring while Ingrid documents it

Leaving the beach and climbing towards Spectacle Head

We pass this unusual building

Views from the top

Michael getting a closer look at the water

A great spot to have morning tea

Morning Tea over we make our way to Rocky Whale Lookout which is a short distance away on the other side of the headland

Then its down to Park Beach and lunch at Carlton River

We are now on Carlton Beach and our destination visible in the distance (the bluff at the end of this beach .. right of centre)

At the mouth of Carlton river

Looking in the opposite direction with Mt Wellington just visible in the distance

Important discussions?

Lunch on the sheltered side out of the wind

Now we start making our way back to the cars .. Chris takes us on a route which initially winds through the established part of Dodges Ferry (close to the beach) but then further up to the newer areas.

We spot this unusual tree which with its smooth bark and colouring looks like it was artificially made out of cast concrete.  Using google the most likely tree I could come up with was Eucalyptus Gunnii ??

Our fearless leader .. in front testing obstacles to ascertain if they are safe for the rest of us to walk over

Along the way we see some weird signs

Also some interesting decorations

Plover defending its nest .. on close inspection its eggs are visible

And even a vintage car. The owner took it for a drive and obligingly tooted the horn (sounded like an old steam locomotive)

Almost at the completion of today's walk we passed this field with 2 alpacas in it

Ingrid waited patiently till she made a new friend and was able to take a close up photo .. not sure if it is smiling for the camera or not

Today 14 walkers covered the 12kms in 4 hours
