Cornelian Bay and Beyond 8 Feb 2022

It is led by Ron and involves a walk alongside the Derwent River crossing a couple of road bridges, a climb to the top of the Domain and then the Botanical Gardens returning along the foreshore to Cornelian Bay.

The initial walk takes us along the rear of Cornelian Bay's iconic boat sheds.

Some are more grand than others and also advertise their owners views.

After crossing the Domain Highway we wander along in front of Government House towards the city.

Mother Duck and her eleven ducklings were taking a huge risk endeavouring to cross the Tasman Highway near the junction to Lower Domain Road. A number of our walkers watched in awe as Mother proceeded to the traffic island stopping vehicles in both directions.  We did not wait to ascertain the result of the attempt.

Crossing the bridge from Queens Domain to Anzac Parade.

Morning tea at the Cenotaph.

Our first view of Mount Wellington with the morning cloud lifting.

The view from the Cenotaph back over the bridge to Queens Domain.

Bypassing the traffic by going under the highway at the Railway Roundabout which is a bit of a misnomer as the trains stopped using this part of Hobart when the Tasman Limited departed Hobart on 9.20am 28th July 1978 on its last scheduled trip nearly 44 years ago.

The New Menzies Centre in the rear and the Old irregular shaped building  in the foreground.

Domain House overlooking the University Rose Garden and the Railway Roundabout.

We are now commencing our walk to the top of the Domain from behind the Hobart Aquatic Centre.

It was obviously the heavy rains during October and November last that contributed to the length of the grass alongside the tracks.

Looking back towards Tranmere.

The Old Battery used for storing Black Powder in the early days. One wag in the group stated that they must have had mobile phones in the day because of the aerial sticking up from the middle roof.

At last a panorama from the top of the Domain including Mount Wellington to Mount Direction.

We were wondering if this little fella turned into a beautiful butterfly or just one of the myriad of brown spotted ones we saw on the day.

The Lily Pond in the Royal Botanical Gardens.

This Mother Duck obviously thought it was safer to rear her group in the Gardens although someone suggested the yellow one might be a ring-in.

Discussing Black Spot on the Coxs Pippin apple tree in The Patch.

Now in the Japanese Garden.

As we were near Mt Fuji we all thought we should climb it.

From behind this looked like Ron was playing Mother Duck and getting everyone across the Domain Highway again.

The view of the Derwent with little wind.

There were 12 walkers covering 13 kms in 4 hours and 20 mins.

From comments made this walk was appreciated after the previous weeks epic.
