Misty Mysterious Mount Wellington - 6 Jul 2021

 Today Mendelt is leading a group of hardy souls who agreed to undertake today's proposed walk even though it was raining when we all arrived at the Kingston meeting point.

At the starting point there were some disparaging comments about the weather and why weren't we all at home in front of the fire with a good book.

However, there were soon some happy faces in the crowd.

Off we go along the Lenah Valley Track.

The view of the city from Sphinx Rock was not your usual stunning views.

Mendelt spent time explaining the formation of the dolerite rock screes on the side of Mount Wellington.

The misty rain clouds made for a very atmospheric walk in some places, and very wet in others.

There was also a bit of rock hopping and bouldering.

At this time the sun was trying very hard to poke through the cloud.

We had 9 walkers who covered 6.7km in 3.5 hrs. and despite the inclement weather everyone noted that it was an interesting and enjoyable walk.

Knocklofty 29 Jun 2021

 Today's walk is lead by Jenny. The forecast was for a fine sunny day following a cold start. So a good walking day.

Everyone is ready to head off into Knocklofty Reserve.

Our first lookout for the day over Sandy Bay and the Casino.

We are now descending the Glover Track to Poets Road. This track commemorates one of Tasmania's early painter John Glover who emigrated from England in 1831 arriving in Tasmania on his 64th birthday.  He lived in Hobart until 1832. At this time he painted "Hobart Town, from the garden where I lived". The painting provides a view of Hobart in 1832 from close to here.

John Glover also spent time in what is now Knocklofty Reserve undertaking other paintings.

This area of Knocklofty was for a number of years a quarry for sandstone used in many of Hobart's old buildings.

This small sandstone plinth was once the marker for a a boundary  corner of old Hobart Town.

This is the site of a house that was destroyed during the 1967 bushfires and was not rebuilt. It is obvious that the occupants of the house were fairly industrious by the number of remaining rock and concrete walls and foundation which appear to various terraced areas.

There were 16 walkers today who walked approximately 10 kms in 3 hours 40 mins.
