Chauncy Vale

Thanks to great efforts by Tas and great photos by Carol, I'm able to bring you some vision of what this walk was like. It really looks like a good walk, and I'm looking forward doing it in the future. Over to Tas.

CHAUNCY VALE to FLAT ROCK RESERVE

Tuesday April 15 2014
16 Walkers

The weather was calm & fine but cloudy at times. Although the area was new to several in the group we did not go up around the Caves Track as we wanted to get to the Eastern Lookout in Flat Rock Reserve. (Note there is some confusion on maps & signs about what is the Eastern Lookout & the Western Lookout. The places stay the same but the names are interchanged.)
The track along Browns Cave Creek was single file through scrub fern & light forest with three creek crossings. As there was very little water in the creek the crossings presented no problems. From the junction of this track & the Caves Track it was uphill all the way but on a wide track with an easy gradient. The track was well marked with blue ribbons and signs at key intersections. We diverted after a short distance to an almost dry Guvy’s Lagoon. A fallen tree trunk made an ideal morning tea site.
Then it was on & upwards through dry sclerophyll forest, some south facing wet forest and back into dry open forest. We did not stop at the Western Lookout but went on to the Eastern Lookout & were rewarded with wonderful views across to the Derwent & Mt Wellington. After lunch on flat rock we returned the way we came to the cars.
Distance was about 11km. Time was 4 hours 15 minutes. As Jack was absent there is no map with statistics this time.
Tas.

Carol’s photographic record follows.

If either Peggy or David could supply their GPS track file I could add the maps to this, I'll ask them on Tuesday rather then bother them over Easter.

Many thanks again to both Tas & Carol for all their effort in getting these to me to publish for you. - Jack
