Powder Magazine - Tinderbox Hill 2017

Today we're doing an old favourite, Wingara Road - Powder Magazine - Tinderbox Hill, and Bob is leading us.

It promises to be a warm day as we park at the junction of Wingara and Brightwater Roads, right beside the Howden Book Exchange.

In the old bus shelter, this has been going for several years

Two book cases and a bench across the back
After checking out the books, we start off down Wingara Rd., which is a gravel surface running beside North West Bay.

A choice of either the high road or the low road

Margate on the other side

We wind past houses and dogs, through some bush to exit near the old Powder Jetty. In the past this was used to land explosives for the short journey to the magazines. Now, it's used by the fish farm industry.

We continue across Tinderbox Road and take a newly mown track between the road and fences.

Bob raids the blackberries along the way

Eventually we come to the entrance to the Tinderbox Nature Reserve and find a spot for Morning Tea.

Back on our feet, we continue heading towards the Magazine, but before we reach the buildings, Bob points us up a "little" hill. We've done this one before and it's steep and slippery plus the day is warming up a treat.

We're going up there and the photo doesn't do it justice!

Looking down
On the climb, I noticed this poor beetle lying on its back, legs going. I knew how it felt, but if I had to go up so should this insect. So I set it right way up, administered a severe chastisement, and sent it back to climbing.

When we've collected everyone at the top, we continue on through brown, dry grass, towards the top.

Mt. Wellington. I bet it's a lot cooler there

Hot, dry and the track is getting overgrown. I doubt if anyone has been up here since our last time
We reach not quite the top, but the spot where we turn left. The road runs up to a communications tower on the top. Next time.

We head north again to another track that will bring us down to the top end of Magazine Gulley.

Picking two of our party who didn't fall for the climb up, but spent a comfortable time waiting for us, we head back out, stopping for lunch at our Morning Tea spot.

After lunch, we retrace our steps back to North West Bay. As we step back onto Tinderbox Road we pass some road workers and a lollipop man holding a sign that said "SLOW". As if we had any other speed!

Bob takes pity on us so we take a short cut back to our return track.

The tide has gone out a little

We had 12 walkers and covered 11.44km in 3:57hrs. A good walk, just a little warm.
