Rocky Tom Trail - 13 Aug 2024

Our walk today is to follow the Rocky Tom Trail behind Geilston Bay and explore some of the side tracks that we come across.

Our intrepid group of explorers set  off from the cars up the Geilston Gully Circuit Track.

Climbing the Goochie Track to the Rocky Tom Track.

A view of the Flagstaff Gull Quarry.

One of the little water courses crossed by a hollow log.

Morning tea on the Rocky Tom Track.

Then we headed straight up the side of Caves Hill to the rocky outcrop on top.

Looking across the climb towards Mt Wellington.

Nearing the top the track was not that clear.

As usual there were some stragglers.

Everyone was pleased to reach the base of the caves.

The formations in the sandstone were quite interesting.

Very interesting formations in the rock faces.

Time spent looking at the view from the top of the caves.

Heading of the top of the Cave Hill to join the Rocky Tom Track.

 Even the photographer was photographed.

We left the Rocky Tom Track just below Ftagstaff Hill and headed up the adjoining un-named?? peak.

With views towards Tranmere

Mt Wellington and the Derwent Estuary

and across towards the airport and beyond.

Some very nice ferns growing on the side of the hill.

We then crossed to the Flagstaff Gully Track before heading back toward the cars.

A couple of the remaining Fungi by the track.

Gorse Bitter Pea (Daviesia ulicifolia).

Not our rescue helicopter.

We had eight walkers who covered 9.2kms and climbed 340 meters in 4.5 hours.

An enjoyable walk on a fine warm 20C lightly cloudy day.  Maybe Spring has finally sprung.

Thanks to Chris for his photos.
