Howrah - Waverley Park - Howrah 19 Jul 2022

Today's walk starts at the end of Howrah Beach and climbs to Waverley Park following the Charles Darwin Walking trail.

We deferred a planned walk on Mt Wellington because of the weather forecast and amount of snow where we were going to go.

An overcast Howrah Beach .

Note in the sandstone the old carved steps access to the beach.

After leaving the beach and traversing a couple of roads we were entering the lower area of Waverley Park when we nearly lost half the group who wanted to stay by the burn-off fire the council workers had going.

The wattles were just starting to come into flower.

New growth on the she-oak trees.

A Kangaroo Grass seed head.

On a previous walk through this area we passed this old car wreck at some distance and wondered about its make.  A closer inspection failed to solve the make.

A recently erected monument to the WWI fallen.

A quarry wall face that was part of the Pitfield Quarry.

Marks in the rock face from the quarrying activities.

The old track through this area has undergone a renovation by the Council since our last visit.

A likely lunch spot with a view.

Can you spot the fourth anchored vessel in the Derwent. Some wag commented that the river was getting as congested as Newcastle NSW shipping waiting for coal loading.

One of the old quarry dams.

The descent from the top of Waverley Park to the suburban streets that we traversed to return to the cars.

A Stairway to Heaven maybe.

We had walkers who covered 10.2 kms in just under 4 hours.

It was a pleasant walk on a good weather day for walking, cold with no wind or rain.
