Moogara - 18 Jun 2024

Our walk today is in the area around Moogara in the hills behind New Norfolk.

This area was a large soft fruit growing area up until the closure of the Jam Factory in Hobart in the late 60' early 70's.

A number of those properties are now soft wood and hardwood plantations with a few of the original settlers still remaining.

We were met at the Moogara Hall by one of the locals (Darrel?) who provided us with a brief history of the area include his attendance at the local one teacher school.

One of the teachers at the school was Peter Tillema,  father of Mendelt. There was a lot of reminiscing which resulted in us having morning tea before we left on the walk.

The walk included some of the plantation area and private property.

Talking about the past.

Finally leaving the cars for the walk.

Heading up hill.

First view of one of the pine plantations.

Looking towards Mt Field National park in the distance.

The start of the Bridgewater Jerry in the upper Derwent River.

These clouds looked ominous but we missed them.

Climbing over one of a few fences.

More rain clouds.

Following the track around a pine plantation.

A green fungi? covering the tip of a fallen pine tree.

A fairly large Lichen? attached to a Callistomen tree.

 Fungi.

Looking towards more plantations.

A well made forestry road .

Entering one of the pine plantations.

Geographically embarrassed but not lost.

We found these in a heap by one of the track and we hope that the target managed to get away but....

Lunch on the edge of a harvested plantation.

Low cloud revealing another view of the back of Mount Wellington.

An impressive bus stop but we don't know where to.

Looking at the largest eucalypt tree that we passed.

It makes Mendelt look quite short.

A renovators delight.

Heading across the creek.

The last hill we hope.

Resting before finishing the climb.

Wandering up the hill through a field of rose bushes.

The last photo towards the Mt Field area.

A thoroughly enjoyable walk around an environment very different from out normal walks.

Thanks to Ingrid and others who helped scout out the walk and meet with the locals.

Thanks to Chris for his photos.

There were 16 walkers who covered 7.8 kms and climbed and descended 210 meters over 3 hours.
