Wellington Huts - 8 July 2025

This is a walk  that we have done previously - Springs to Lone Cabin, then to the Huts and Organ Pipe / Pinnacle Track back to the Springs.

The  forecast was for a cool windy day of about 8 with rain forecast later in the day - we were hoping to complete the walk before the rain started.

Getting Ready

Making our way to the Springs

On the Lenah Valley Track making heading towards Lone Cabin

We stop on the track to admire the view

Lone Cabin and it's time for morning tea

Morning tea over we head off towards the mountain huts - initially back along the Lenah Valley Track

Leaving the well formed track and getting onto the much smaller trail to the huts which goes straight up for about 250m

Passing some Juniper bushes

We reach Kara Hut and have a look around

Walking towards the second hut - this photo gives a good idea of the steepness of the slope going towards Pinnacle Road (we will have to go up there after lunch)

Small fungi getting shelter beside the rock

 Some more rock hopping

The knot on the right of this log looks like a good stubby holder

We reach the second hut - "The Retreat" and it 's time for lunch. There was some furniture inside which made comfortable seating

All good retreats come with amenities such as fridges

These Richea Diacophylla were growing beside the hut

Up the slope towards Pinnacle Road

Looking back - this photo is taken only about 30 metres from the hut which is already hidden by the thick bush (it is to the left of the log lying on the ground)

We reach Pinnacle road

Leaving the road and making our way to the Organ Pipes Track

Yippee - more climbing and more rocks - just what we wanted

Looking back down the climb

Finally we reach the Organ Pipes / Pinnacle Track and make our way back to the Springs

 The view looking towards Kingston

The Organ Pipes

One of the tracks used by climbers to access the Organ Pipes

The clear patch below is the Hobart Waste Management Site (Tip) - last week we walked along it's southern fence line.

This track was recently upgraded to cope with the traffic it is expected to handle - the surface and stonework testify to the good job that was done.

Almost back to the cars

Today 12 walkers covered 9kms while climbing 400m over a variety of surfaces including some memorable climbs on boulders.  The weather played its part - although it threatened to rain and blow a gale at various times during the day it held off for the duration of our walk.

This map shows the general area of today's walk

Cascade Gardens - Towards Junction Cabin 1 July 2025

Today is a lovely winters day - currently 2 degrees  with a forecast high of about 5, with no clouds, rain or wind expected.  Again we have perfect walking weather.

We set of from Cascade Gardens on our way towards Junction Cabin (a total climb of 550 metres).

We soon reach the fire trail which overlooks Mcrobies Gully Waste Management Facility (it used to be called Hobart Tip)

This photo clearly shows the frost in the shady parts of the tip area as opposed to the sunny track we are walking on which was quite pleasant

This electronic device (past its use by date) has captured Greg's interest

Decent from the dry area to the gully which is a lot wetter.

The stream provides a nice reflection as the walkers disappear into the distance

We take the route towards the Main Fire Trail

Bright Orange Fungi

Natures artwork

We make use of a bike track to climb out of the gully

A view back towards the gully we were previously walking in - it shows the transition from a wet to a dry landscape

A good spot for morning tea - in the sun

After morning tea we use the Jurassic Shark Track (mountain biking) until we reach the Main Fire Trail.

As it's a bit of a drudge climbing up the track towards Junction Cabin we have a discussion and decide to take the Old Farm Trail back down to the Main Fire Trail

Along the way there is a glimpse of Mt Wellington with it's distinctive tower visible

 Lunch in the sunshine.

Lunch over we take the Cascade Track to make our way back to the brewery, Cascade Gardens and then our cars.

Degraves Bridge

A bit further on we reach the "Leaning Tree"

Sally pointing out the remains of the race in Guy Fawkes Rivulet once used by the brewery to get their water

Almost back

Today 16 walkers enjoyed their walk of  9.5kms in cool but sunny weather.  Since we were last in the area there has been an increase in the number of bike tracks as well as extensions to others.

Thanks to Ingrid and Chris for their photos
